Government data has revealed close to 30 English areas which are being closely monitored as potential coronavirus hotspots.

Several locations – across West Yorkshire, East Lancashire and Greater Manchester – have already been placed under renewed lockdown restrictions due to high rates of coronavirus, with measures now extended in some areas where cases have failed to fall.

The areas included on the government’s local lockdown “watch list” are those at risk of having restrictions levied on them, including a ban on households mixing with one another.

Coronavirus spiking in certain areas

On 10 August, a surge of coronavirus cases in Oldham saw the area become the worst affected in England, overtaking Leicester, the previous hotspot. Swindon, Preston and Bedford were also added to the watch list on that date.

At a national level, the most recent government figures show that coronavirus cases remain stable, though spiking in certain local areas.

A total of 29 local areas are now on the coronavirus watch list, under different labels determined by the government:

  • Area(s) of concern: Areas with the highest prevalence of coronavirus, where the local area is taking targeted actions to reduce prevalence (for example, additional testing in care homes and increased community engagement with high risk groups)
  • Area(s) for enhanced support: For areas at medium or high risk of intervention, where there is a more detailed plan, agreed with the national team and with additional resources being provided to support the local team (such as epidemiological expertise, additional mobile testing capacity)
  • Area(s) of intervention: Where there is divergence from the measures in place in the rest of England because of the significance of the spread, with a detailed action plan in place, and local resources augmented with a national support
