Industrial site to be transformed into housing development

A former industrial site is set to be transformed into a housing development after planners gave the green light. A total of 38 affordable homes are set to be built in the Aspull area of Wigan.

The site on Cale Lane is currently used for warehousing and open storage but planners have approved an application by Wigan-based MCI Developments for this to be replaced with 26 two-bed and 12 three-bed houses. Properties will be available for affordable and social rent or shared ownership.

A report on Wigan council’s planning portal says the site is currently in use as a ‘warehousing premises’, which supports jobs. However the site is no longer ‘fit for purpose’, the application states.

It says: “The applicant’s position is that the site is no longer suitable for employment given ts location away from major transport corridors and its close relationship with existing residential properties.

“It is clear the premises are no longer fit for purpose and cannot viably be brought up to standard…and it is considered that the applicant has demonstrated that the site could not be reasonably made suitable to meet current or likely future demand.”
